How to stay healthy while working from home

Published by Dresdner Essenz on 15th Apr 2020

For most of the world facing the COVID-19 crisis, going to work no longer means heading out the door, and instead, it consists of taking a few short steps to a home office and completing the day virtually. Working from home can be hard if you’re not properly prepared, and it can be especially difficult to keep a healthy lifestyle with distractions from family and to-do’s around the house. Here are some great tips you can follow to help you stay productive and healthy while adjusting to your new work-from-home lifestyle.

Set up a dedicated office space

Your office space doesn’t need to be anything special. The main goal of having a dedicated space is to separate your home life from your work life. If you don’t already have a home office, choose a spot in your house where you can escape distractions, like a guest bedroom with a desk or a dining room table. Setting up shop in your bed or on your couch could tempt you to relax when you should be working or vice versa.

Stick to a routine

Treat your schedule as if you were still getting up to go to work. It’s easy to sleep in and work odd hours when you don’t have to leave the house but sticking to your routine will benefit your mental health and well-being. Try to stick to the usual as much as possible, including getting up at the same time, taking a shower, getting dressed, and making breakfast with your morning coffee. And when it comes to clocking out for the night, try to wrap things up at the same time you normally would.

Block your time

Sometimes sticking to the regular 9-5 just isn’t possible when you have to take care of your family, too. If you can’t dedicate 8 full hours to your job, it’s ok to split your time into manageable chunks. To make sure you stick to this schedule, block your time out the day before and stick to it, and also be sure to let your coworkers know so they can be prepared. Be accountable with yourself and your time, and don’t let work-life bleed into your home life.

Take frequent breaks

If the weather is nice, go outside and take a short stroll. If you’re stuck indoors, turn up the music and dance to your favorite song, or take a few trips up and down your flight of stairs. It’s important for your physical health to keep moving as much as you can.

Create a calming environment

Working virtually means you can decorate your space however you choose. If you like candles, set up a few around the room, or if you like having greenery in your home, put a few plants in the corner. Whatever you decide, create a space that is calming for you to help reduce any unnecessary stress.

Relax at the end of the day

Working from home requires a lot of discipline, self-control, and organization, and that can be stressful. It’s important to take some time for yourself at the end of the day to relax and unwind. Whether that means reading a chapter in your favorite book or soaking in a warm bath, do something to help take your mind off of work so you can feel refreshed for the next day.
